1. Labour Costs
Web design involves a lot of different skill sets, from coding to graphic design to user experience (UX) design. Most web designers specialise in one or two of these areas but very few know all three. That being said, the hourly rate for a web designer can range anywhere from £50/hour to £250/hour, depending on their level of experience and expertise. When you consider that most websites take at least 40 hours to complete, you can see how the cost of labour can quickly add up.
2. Cost of Software and Tools
In addition to their hourly rate, most web designers also charge a small fee to cover the cost of the software and tools they use to do their job. These can include things like Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Invision, and more. While some of these tools have free versions available, the paid versions usually offer more features and functionality—something that’s worth paying for if you want your website to be top-notch.
3. Domain Name and Hosting Fees
Your domain name is your website’s address on the internet (e.g., www.example.com). In order for people to be able to find your website online, you’ll need to register your domain name with a registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap. Domain name registration typically costs around £10-15 per year. Once you’ve registered your domain name, you’ll also need to pay for web hosting which is essentially renting space on a server for your website files. Depending on your needs, hosting can cost anywhere from £5/month to £500/month or more.
Web design is expensive—there’s no doubt about it. But it doesn’t have to be out of reach for small businesses. By understanding a few key factors that contribute to the cost of web design, you can make an informed decision about whether or not it’s worth investing in for your business. And if you do decide that web design is a worthwhile investment, there are plenty of ways to save money without sacrificing quality.
